Dramatic changes to the UK's Covid-19 policy could see tough local lockdowns put in place to limit the spread of the virus. Boris Johnson is set to announce the start of the Government's new track and trace programme which has been successfully implemented in countries like Germany and South Korea.

The PM will say the system will go live on either Thursday or Friday, The Sun reports. It will involve an army of 25,000 contact tracers who will help identify new cases of coronavirus.

If particular areas are found to be coronavirus hotspots, entire towns could be placed on a strict lockdown. Schools, workplaces and businesses could also be shut down if a localised breakout of the virus is identified.
