Humiliated Russians retreat from Chernobyl nuclear site over 'radiation fears'

Ukraine have now left the plant with reports suggesting it was down to radiation concerns.Energoatom, who are state-owned and oversees Ukraine's nuclear power plants, announced today that troops have withdrawn from the plant.In a statement published on Telegram, they said: "It was confirmed that the occupiers, who seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and other facilities in the Exclusion Zone, marched in two columns towards the Ukrainian border with the Republic of Belarus."Energoatom said earlier that Russia had formally agreed to hand back the responsibility for protecting Chernobyl to Ukraine.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said late on Thursday that it was preparing to send a mission to Chernobyl.Ukraine now has control of the nuclear power plant for the first time since late February, when Russian forces took control following Vladimir Putin's invasion plans being launched.Ukrainian staff continued to work at the site during Russia's control of the plant as they helped to oversee the safe storage of spent nuclear fuel and supervise the remains of the reactor that exploded in 1986.Earlier today it was reported that Russian troops were leaving the site after struggling with "acute radiation sickness" as they dug trenches around the infamous site.Chernobyl staff are said to have seen Russian troops driving “a big convoy of military vehicles” through a wooded area near the reactor known as the “Red Forest.The disturbance in the forest saw huge clouds of radioactive soil and dust being kicked up into the air.Reports have revealed the troops are retreating back to Belarus, which is close to the Ukrainian border where Chernobyl is located..
