Russia's "illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine" shows how much Vladimir Putin's forces have retreated over the past two weeks. The map, released by the British Ministry of Defence, is based of the latest defence intelligence, the ministry said.It shows that Russia appears to have lost much of its footing in the north of Ukraine, around Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy, near the border with the aggressor.

The British Ministry of Defence map instead shows Russia's efforts concentrated on the east, south east and south. Kharkiv, just southeast of Sumy, is the beginning point of a Russian belt of control that stretches all the way down to Kherson, an important port on the Black Sea and on the Dnieper River. This belt goes via the Russian separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.

However, Russian forces are still striking locations throughout Ukraine, as far east as Lviv, around 70 kilometers from the border with Poland.Maps published two weeks ago by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) illustrate how much ground Ukraine had won back around Kyiv, before a full scale retreat from Russian forces soon after. "Ukrainian forces have retaken key terrain in the north of Ukraine, after denying Russia the ability to secure its objectives and forcing Russian forces to retreat from the areas around Chernihiv and north of Kyiv," Britain's Ministry of Defense said at the time. "Low-level fighting is likely to continue in some parts of the newly recaptured regions" until "the remainder of Russian forces withdraw," and those forces "are likely to require significant re-equipping and refurbishment before being available to redeploy for operations in eastern Ukraine."It was reported in early April that Russia had revised its Ukraine war.
