Putin sees the recovery of Russia’s empire as his “historic mission” but some elite Russians fear the massive sanctions imposed by the West are too high a price to pay.
While a few business leaders have dared to voice their concerns about the damage done to Russia by the western economic onslaught that Putin has called an “economic blitzkrieg”, most are too afraid of Russia’s notorious secret police to speak openly about the war.
One Russian billionaire, Oleg Deripaska, called the attack on Ukraine “insanity”. He added that while it could have been over in less than a month with “reasonable negotiation” but instead, he warned, the fighting could drag on for years.A total of 10 anonymous Moscow sources, speaking to Bloomberg, says they fear Putin will continue with his assault on Ukraine, dooming Russia to “years of isolation and heightened tension that will leave its economy crippled”.
