HE is the cheery host with the most on TV, and now Chris Tarrant is on hosting duties of a different sort – after welcoming three Ukrainian refugees into his home.
But the former Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? quizmaster, turned rail travel presenter is also furious at the web of rules and checks thwarting others wanting to take in refugees fleeing Vladimir Putin’s bombs.
Chris, 75, said: “It’s a nightmare of civil service bureaucratic c**p. people are desperate to get into this country and they can’t get through all that red tape. “When you consider all the people who do get into this country, you think, ‘For God’s sake, the Ukrainians — of all people — we should be giving priority to.’” His broadside comes after Home Secretary Priti Patel was forced to apologise for the migration delays, saying the UK’s hosting scheme had been “a victim of its own popularity”.
But Chris, who lives in Berkshire with partner Jane Bird, has opened his house to a Ukrainian woman, her elderly mum and nine-month-old baby, while her husband stays home to fight the Russian forces.
