Katy Perry didn’t attend the Met Gala, but thanks to AI, her Mom thinks she did. The California Gurls singer appeared to share a text message in which her Mom was fooled by a fake image of her daughter at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Her Mom said: “Ha Feather! Didn’t know you went to the Met. What a gorgeous gown. You look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.” Perry, who posted the exchange on Instagram, replied: “lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!” In a caption, she added: “Couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work.” A post shared by KATY PERRY (@katyperry) A post on X (formerly Twitter) featuring the fake Perry photo was viewed more than 13M times.
User context noted: “This was created with AI. The stairs are also from 2018, not 2024.” Perry was not the only celebrity to get the deep fake treatment.
Other AI images included Rihanna and Selena Gomez. The 2024 Met Gala theme was “The Garden of Time,” which stems from the museum’s exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Those in attendance included Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Lana Del Rey, Kelsea Ballerini, Rebecca Ferguson, Uma Thurman, and Gwendoline Christie.
