dailystar.co.ukGareth Southgate has given his immediate response to England’s World Cup draw, saying that his 'first objective is getting out of the group.' The Three Lions were seeded in Group B along with Iran, America, and one of Ukraine, Scotland, or Wales.
The general consensus is that England have been handed an easier group for the competition commencing this year in Qatar - but manager Southgate does not believe progression to the knockout stages will not happen without a fight.“The first two teams we haven't played for quite a while, and the third is a total unknown but throws up a possible British derby,” the 51-year-old said. “We know what they're about and we've had plenty of them.
For us, we're in on day one so it's quite clear what our programme looks like with the end of the Premier League season, getting out here as quickly as possible.“When you're seeded, you get the advantage of missing out on those big six or seven teams.
For most of the first seeds, they'd be pleased with the first group they get. There are some really highly ranked teams in pot two, and the US is an interesting one." And keeping a level head, the former Aston Villa defender stated that, equally, the team will not get ahead of themselves and will only play what’s in front of them - and that starts with the group.
