Original films like “Novocaine,” “Black Bag” and “Mickey 17” are failing to draw sizable crowds, while sequels in once-reliable franchises such as “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Paddington in Peru” are falling drastically short of their predecessors. Attendance is expected to pick up in spring and into the summer, as “A Minecraft Movie,” “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Lilo & Stitch” and other blockbuster hopefuls land in theaters.

Jamie Lang National Board of Review student grant-winning actor, screenwriter and director Constanza Majluf-Baeza is developing her debut feature “Pink Desert” (“Desierto rosa”), which will participate in the upcoming MAFF Co-Production Fund and Meeting Event at the Malaga Film Festival. Set in 1970 in a desert mining town in northern Chile, “Pink Desert” follows the story of Mariola, a 17-year-old known in the town as Mario. Sporadic rains bring bursts of life to the driest place on Earth, and in the midst of this landscape, Mariola gets invited by a theatre company of travestis to travel to Lima, Peru.

Alex Ritman James Lamont and Jon Foster, best known for being two-thirds of the writing team behind “Paddington in Peru,” are reteaming for the newly-announced AI animated feature “Critterz.” The project is a feature-length adaptation of 2023’s groundbreaking short film of the same name, and comes from Vertigo Films, the Federation Studios-owned U.K. production company, which is teaming with AI creatives at Native Foreign.
