Jamie Carragher has hailed Franco Baresi for producing the greatest ever display from a defender in the history of football.The AC Milan icon, 61, spent the entirety of his career at the Rossoneri racking up an incredible 719 appearances at the San Siro in a career spanning 20 years.Considered one of the club's most significant captains, Baresi guided the club to three European Cup conquests on top of six Serie A titles and was the runner-up for the Ballon d'Or in 1989.And Carragher, who went on to have a solid career at centre-back himself, couldn't help but praise his former idol when responding to a fan question and answer session on social media.Quizzed on what the best performance from a centre-back in a single match was, Carragher said: “It’s [Baresi] in the 1994 World Cup final v Brazil!“Up against Romario [and] Bebeto in his first game back after a knee op which he had after the [first] game of the tournament!”Baresi was outstanding in that match, helping the Azzurri keep a clean sheet against one of Brazil's best ever sides.Unfortunately, the Italian was unable to clinch the Jules Rimet trophy as the Seleaco recorded their fourth World Cup triumph via a penalty shootout - in which Baresi missed the opening spot-kick.HAVE YOUR SAY!
