Gareth Southgate has vowed to give under-fire England star Harry Maguire his full support. But the Three Lions boss has warned Maguire that he still has a fight on his hands to earn a place in his World Cup team.
Southgate was left seething with England supporters for booing Maguire before and during Tuesday's 3-0 win over Cote d'Ivoire at Wembley.
Maguire's name was jeered before kick off - leading Southgate to blast those responsible as a "joke". The defender has endured a miserable season as Manchester United captain following a string of woeful performances.
Critics have called for him to be dropped from both the England and United sides. Southgate wants England fans to get behind Maguire instead of abusing him - because the nation needs to be united heading towards Qatar 2022.But Southgate admits he still cannot guarantee Maguire's place in the team - and that he will have to earn it heading towards the World Cup showpiece in the Middle East.
