This week shoppers will be made to wear face masks in shops and supermarkets across England. From July 24, anyone who flouts the rules could face a fine of up to £100 under the regulations set out by ministers a week ago.
Currently wearing a face mask is only mandatory when using public transport in England. However the new rules will fall in line with 120 other countries, including Scotland, that have also made face coverings compulsory in public spaces.
In Wales and Northern Ireland, residents are encouraged to wear coverings in shops and supermarkets but it is not required by law.
