Two men charged with 'endangering ships' over Isle of Wight tanker security incident

Two men have been charged over a security incident on board a tanker off the Isle of Wight coast in October. Matthew John Okorie, 25 and Sunday Sylvester, 22, appeared in court today charged with an offence relating to conduct endangering ships under S.58 Merchant Shipping Act 1995.

The two men were at Southampton Magistrates Court and have been remanded in custody to appear in crown court in late January.

On October 25 there were reports that the Nave Andromeda, a Liberian-flagged crude oil tanker, was the victim of a suspected hijacking when stowaways grew violent.

There were reports of safety for the ships 22 crew members. A mayday call was issued at roughly 9am, which was responded to at 10:04am by Hampshire Police.
