Harry Maguire believes it's 'embarrassing' that it has taken 139 attempts for Manchester United to score from a corner and has urged the side to continue improving their set plays.
United boosted their top-four chances on Sunday as they defeated bitter foes Leeds United 4-2 in an epic encounter. Maguire responded well after a difficult week in which his captaincy of the club has been called into question as he powered home a header from Luke Shaw's corner to give United the lead.
It was the first time United had scored from a corner since a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United on January 27, 2021, 389 days ago, in which Maguire also scored.
United had been the only team in the Premier League not to score from one this season and Maguire admits the stat had started to get humiliating for himself and the team. "Every time I see the stat I feel embarrassed myself," he told Sky Sports. "I'm a big part in that set play routine and trying to score goals from corners but as a team, as a group, we've been nowhere near good enough. "It's a big part of the game and for sure if we score more from corners and set plays we'd be higher in the table. "I know you can play all this pretty football but set plays are a massive part of the game and for sure this season has been nowhere near good enough on that behalf." Fernandes also scored with his head to give United a 2-0 lead at the break but once again they crumbled after the restart, though this time in adverse weather conditions due to the torrential rain, and allowed their opponents back into the game.
