History website realises naughty Google search is to blame for surge in visitors

website was blitzed with hits after directing buffs to an 18th Century listed building – called Cock Ring. Huddersfield Exposed noticed a massive upsurge in traffic from web surfers following links from Google searches.

Bosses realised the interest may not be down to people desperate for information about the West Yorkshire smallholding. But they welcomed their new visitors on Twitter, saying: “A big shout out to everyone who has searched for ‘cock ring’ on Google and clicked through to Huddersfield Exposed. “Hope you found what you were looking for!” They added: “As a side note, this is the only Cock Ring in the entire country that has been granted Grade II listed status by Historic England.’’ Visitors searching for sex toys probably did not hang around to study the history of the settlement, which is made up of two former cottages and a barn.

Granted listed status in 1985, Cock Ring boasted a pitched slate roof, mullioned windows and cornerstones known as chamfered quoins.

It is not clear how it earned its saucy moniker. The property overlooks the Colne Valley, and has since been modernised and landscaped.And Slaithwaite's Cock Ring also gets its own entry into the Historic England database.It is one of many weird and wonderful place names in Huddersfield and the wider Yorkshire area.But history experts reckon whoever named it may have had a sense of humour.Other locations nearby include Long Tongue and Mucky Lane.
