Seven areas where coronavirus rates have soared as UK endures deadliest day in months

Hull has emerged as England's second worst coronavirus hotspots after the number of new cases there swelled by 77% in just a week.

The city is only behind topspot Oldham after a huge leap in its infection rate, Public Health England figures show. Other areas to see alarming rises include North East Lincolnshire - which now has the fourth highest rate - Kirklees, Wakefield and South Staffordshire.

Scarborough saw its infection rate go from 159.1 to 418.4 in seven days, while cases in Melton more than doubled, going up from 150.4 to 312.4.

But there was some encouragement, with six of the 10 worst-affected areas showing week-on-week drops in the number of cases.
