robot dogs will soon be deployed at the U.S.-Mexico border to patrol for 'illegal activity', according to the US Department of Homeland Security. The Ghost Robotics dogs, which have four legs and can't be pushed over or easily destroyed, will be used by police to enforce strict border laws on the US' wild Southwest border."Due to the demands of the region, adding quadruped mechanical reinforcements is a smart use of resources.

Despite the dangers, and maybe even using them as cover, there are many types of illegal activity that happen in the harsh border zones," DHS said in a statement."The southern border can be an inhospitable place for man and beast, and that is exactly why a machine may excel there," added DHS Science and Technology Derectorate manager Brenda Long.Ghost Robotics' 'robot dog' is itself very resilient, and can't be pushed over or easily attacked."They're unstoppable, with the ability to get right back from any slip, fall, or failure and keep moving using our proprietary blind-mode operation," Ghost Robotics explains on its site.

The robot dog proved highly controversial last year, when the company unveiled a new model mounted with a gigantic sniper rifle that can take out targets from almost a mile away.

Ghost Robotics teamed up with weapons manufacturer SWORD Defense Systems to unveil the SPUR. This 'Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle' attaches to a robotic 'quadruped', or robot dog, and can devastate military targets from as far away as 1.2km.
