One of England's last coal mines shuts as Tories accused of 'industrial sabotage'

Mining bosses accused the Government of “industrial sabotage” as one of England’s last coal mines closes tomorrow. Miners at the Bradley surface mine at Leadgate, County Durham, will extract their last coal on Monday.

The closure was announced after the local authority refused permission to extend the site. Operator Banks Mining says 250 skilled jobs are at risk in the family-owned firm, which still runs mines in Scotland and South Wales.

Mining industry bosses and the National Union of Mineworkers both accused the Government of stalling on planning applications.
