Hurriyet Daily News reports. An arrest warrant linked Salifov to the killing of another mafia boss, Rovshan Caniyev, in Istanbul two years earlier.In 2017, ten members of a Turkish gang known as 'The Smurfs' were busted by police during a meeting with Caniyev's brother - it is believed the gang had been offered payment to assassinate Salifov.Investigators in Turkey later released Salifov and he was handed over to authorities to be deported back to Azerbaijan.However Salifov, who is understood to have feared for his safety in his home country, instead went to the Middle East, and is believed to have re-entered Turkey illegally using a false passport.In February this year, a Turkish police operation detained 17 Russian mafia members caught.
