In the last year, though, the tide had already begun to turn, as the message to buy less and buy better was sinking in and encouraging people to think beyond the obvious retail behemoths when it came to buying new clothes.
Dozens of small fashion labels and boutiques have successfully launched in Britain in the last five years, collectively chipping away at the share of the market previously held by the global mega-brands.
