Google Maps has taken a highly unusual move in a bid to keep people in Ukraine safe from the Russian military. Google has temporarily disabled its mapping service which provides live traffic data in Ukraine in a bid to mask how busy different areas are.

That has been done as a result of fears that Russian forces could target crowded areas, including shops and restaurants. The live traffic data function on Google Maps works by incorporating location and speed information from smartphones and using it to show live how busy traffic conditions are or how busy areas are.

The tech giants said live traffic information remains available to drivers using its turn-by-turn navigation features in the area.

Google's announcement came just days after the Ukrainian government ordered road signs to be removed across the country in order to confuse invading Russian forces and make it harder for them to find their way around.
