Inside UK's Rwanda asylum seeker hotel with gift shop, volleyball and free cigarettes
asylum seekers to be flown out to Rwanda will arrive this week — and will be warmly welcomed to a resort-style hotel.Under the government’s controversial resettlement policy, the central African country will be the destination for 150 migrants who have arrived in the UK illegally. The decision, which has seen a legal challenge rejected by the high court, has been widely condemned, with even Prince Charles calling the move “appalling”. But the fate that awaits them 4,000 miles away in Rwanda stands in stark contrast to drab detention and processing centres back home.Hope Hotel, in the capital of Kigali, is a 50-room, four-storey establishment, set amid lush green lawns, with jacaranda plants adding a fragrant scent to the air while palm trees sway in the breeze. They will be given bathroom goodies, will be well fed in the restaurant, with three meals a day, while a volleyball court is being constructed outside just for them. There is also a ‘suggestion box’ where they can air their grievances, should they have any, while an array of new washing machines have been installed along with computers in special business areas.
