Emmanuel Macron arrived at Westminster Hall on Sunday to pay his respects to the late Queen, he sparked an enthusiastic debate online.

Not because he had skipped the queue, or was in breach of royal mourning protocol in some way. No, the reason for the Twitterstorm was that he had teamed his blazer and trousers with a pair of navy New Balance trainers.

Macron’s footwear of choice is evidence, if it were needed, that the trend for all-occasion trainers is here to stay. Even before the pandemic, the average 35 to 44-year-old man, according to an eBay study, owned eight pairs, while the global market for trainers is set to be worth $102b by 2025.  “The style-conscious man is increasingly wearing the kind of sneakers in their daily outfits that you’d have previously only seen hiking or on the sports field,” says David Morris, footwear buyer for Mr Porter. “Men are expanding the less formal options in their wardrobes, whether it’s for the gym, weekend, or a more relaxed work environment.” A recent collaboration between Adidas and the British fashion label Wales Bonner, Morris reveals, sold out in just minutes.

So is it the end of the road for the brogue, derby and loafer? Will formal footwear be joining other long-gone styles in the great big shoebox in the sky?
