With its Thames-side view and exquisite food this institution will be the first port of call for our writer when lockdown lifts An enormous piece of roasted turbot - cooked in the vast, dome-shaped wood-burning oven that dominates one end of the dining room - or a plate of asparagus, golden with parmesan and butter.

Crab-flecked linguine with lemon. This is what we ate at the River Cafe, and it never sounded particularly fancy (though it was eye-rollingly delicious).

The white crinkly paper tablecloths were always a bit flyaway in the breeze, especially if the terrace doors had been opened on a spring Saturday.
