Rail services resume following completion of latest phase of work at Carstairs junction

Direct weekday rail services between Glasgow and Carlisle have resumed following completion of the latest phase of the £164 million project to upgrade Carstairs junction.As part of the Scottish Government-funded investment, engineers have been working to simplify and upgrade the track layout on the West Coast mainline (WCML) in South Lanarkshire – clearing bottlenecks and making the junction more reliable.Since the closure of the line at the start of March, engineers have installed 7km of track and laid more than 10,000 new sleepers.Overhead power infrastructure and signalling systems have also been replaced or renewed during the project, with direct services resuming on Monday, April 24.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.
