Valentine's Day.But if you're anything like us, it can be a struggle to keep the beautiful blooms alive.Thankfully, there's a handy hack that stops petals falling so quickly. In the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook, a savvy user revealed you can use 2p coins to increase the longevity of flowers.Simply pop a few coppers in the bottom of your vase and jobs a good'un.The Facebook user shared a snap of their bouquet, explaining: “These are nearly 2 weeks old, with a 2p in the bottom!

Definitely works.”Another agreed: “Works for me.”The Conversation says copper coins can be antimicrobial, which may be why they can be used to keep flowers looking freshly-picked.It explains: “Cut flowers begin to degrade almost instantly.

Air and bacteria can block the small pores of the vascular system of plants, stopping vital water and food from being distributed around the flower, and they start to wilt.“So by reducing the microorganisms in the flower’s water you should be able to increase the life of your flowers.“So again, in theory, the copper in coins might be able to kill bacteria and keep cut flowers fresh."This isn't the only way to keep your flowers looking tip-top.Others shared their words of advice in the Facebook group, including sticking a needle in the stem below the buds.Apparently, this helps the buds to stand up straighter.Others recommend cutting the stems at an angle before placing them in water with plant food.Doing this is said to help the bouquet absorb more water and nutrients.
