Radiation levels at Chernobyl spike dramatically as Russian troops keep workers hostage
Chernobyl nuclear power plant have seen a rapid increase since Russian forces dramatically moved in last night.Observers noticed an "anomalous" jump in recorded radiation a the site in the Kiev region of Ukraine in the hours after Vladimir Putin's forces occupied the area late on Thursday evening.A data chart from a radiation tracking site, published by independent news website Nexta on Twitter, showed a huge spike in the nSv count.Nexta tweeted alongside the graph: "Anomalous jumps in radiation levels recorded in the #Kiyv region near Chernobyl."It comes after reports earlier in the evening that a violent attack may have destroyed a nuclear waste storage facility at the location, according to an advisory to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.Fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces in the area in the north of the country could have led to the damage, according to NBC News. However, these reports are yet to be independently verified.NBC's Richard Engel tweeted this afternoon: "Advisor to Ukrainian interior ministry says Russian forces entered Chernobyl and that fighting there destroyed a nuclear waste storage facility."Workers at the site were also reportedly taken hostage as Russian tanks rolled in.A 1,000 square-mile exclusion zone was set up around Chernobyl in 1986 after the worst nuclear disaster in human history.Around 49,000 people were evacuated from the area, primarily from the neighbouring town of Pripyat.
