Labour has accused ministers of being “asleep at the wheel” over the reopening of schools next week. Millions of children in England are due to return to lessons next week amid mounting warnings about the long-term damage of failing to attend classes despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The Government botched a planned reopening in June – and there are fears some parents will be too scared to send their kids to school next month.
