Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis has confirmed that the government's proposed changes to a Brexit agreement will break international law "in a limited way".
It came just hours after the government's top civil servant lawyer quit - with the UK's decision understood to have underpinned the decision.
Even former Tory PM Theresa May raised concerns in the Commons over how the decision would affect the UK's perception abroad.
She said: “The UK Government signed the Withdrawal Agreement with the Northern Ireland protocol, this Parliament voted that Withdrawal Agreement into UK legislation. “The Government is now changing the operation of that agreement.
