Shark expert warns ‘we are going to get more fatalities’ as bait fish bounce back

great white sharks and their main prey, seals, are making their numbers rebound and increasing the risk of shark attacks on humans, an expert has warned.The ironic uptick in numbers will be noticed when great whites move up the Atlantic coast of the United States, toward New England, with their numbers peaking between August and October."There's a general increase in the population that we think is the population rebounding after being protected," Gregory Skomal, a senior fisheries scientist for the state of Massachusetts, told AFP.READ MORE: America's first shark panic saw beast bite man's legs clean off and child eaten aliveSeals are also rebounding thanks to increased protections."If you have more sharks feeding close to land and you have more people swimming, the chances for those kinds of negative interactions increases," said Skomal.The New York governor has just announced additional drone and helicopter surveillance patrols to spot sharks lurking in the waters.

Half a dozen bites, though not necessarily from great whites, have been reported on Long Island beaches this year, after a stretch of three years without any.

Nick Whitney, a senior scientist at the New England Aquarium, said sharks' main bait enjoying an uptick in numbers might be the reason behind the beasts flocking to the tourist-heavy areas.
