Hollywood award shows are increasingly moving to rejig categories that have typically been split into male and female, with the Independent Spirit Awards and the Gotham Awards (and, here in Canada, the Canadian Screen Awards) among those to introduce gender-neutral categories.

Sophia Scorziello editor HBO’s “The Last of Us” took home the program of the year award at the 44th Banff World Media Festival. The series was awarded at the 2023 Rockie Award Gala on Tuesday evening alongside other individuals, programs, films and media outlets. The event is held annually in Banff, Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. Craig Robinson, actor and producer with credits on programs like “The Office,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Killing It,” was awarded with the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award. Robinson was also the host of the festival’s flagship awards program. The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to “Eternal Spring” and the Buffalo Rock Award went to “Star Trek” for its legacy in TV programming.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic A slow-burn Rocky Mountain noir set along the corridor between Billings, Mont., and the Canadian border — a cold, lonely stretch of highway shared by salesmen and smugglers alike — “Blood for Dust” establishes a ruthless sense of sangfroid from its opening shot. On a desk in a bland business office sits a family portrait, depicting a proud Marine and his family. Without warning, a shotgun goes off, splattering the photo and the wall behind it in blood and brain matter. The camera pulls back to reveal the same man, his face half-missing, a briefcase full of cash propped open on his desk. It’s a jarring — and jarringly artificial — scene. Fortunately, it’s the only one that rings false in director Rod Blackhurst’s otherwise tense, no-nonsense thriller, a standout of the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival that merits comparison to “Breaking Bad” or “Hell or High Water,” but with snow instead of sand. Moments after that opening gun blast, “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harrington (sporting a sleazy handlebar mustache) and Scoot McNairy (as his hangdog accomplice) show up, too late to save the friend who offed himself. In taking his own life, the dead man saved theirs. The question that lingers is how long their luck may last.

Chris Stapleton fans in upstate New York are missing their shot of "Tennessee Whiskey."  Stapleton postponed a performance of his "All American Road Show" scheduled for Thursday night.   "Due to the ongoing air conditions in the greater Syracuse area, tomorrow night’s show at @StJosephsAmp will be rescheduled," he tweeted to fans.  "All previously purchased tickets for the original date will be honored for the new date.

Compared to the feverish, fan-theory-fueled heights of Season 1, the response to “Yellowjackets” has felt more muted the second time around. This lowered volume is partly due to factors outside the Showtime drama’s control. The network programmed the new season in the midst of a crowded Emmys rush, pitting it directly against fellow contenders like the final chapter of “Succession.” A confusing release schedule split new episodes between Fridays, when they became available to stream on an app that soon won’t exist, and Sundays, when they aired on Showtime’s linear network — diffusing the impact of a plot-driven, suspenseful show that might otherwise become live-tweeted, appointment TV. Worse yet, Showtime’s standalone app will be merged with Paramount+ in a month, but not in time to expose “Yellowjackets” to a potential wider audience.

Every year, on the third Thursday of May, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Vyshyvanka. The occasion pays tribute to the country's original folk traditions and sees citizens wearing embroidered Ukrainian clothes, including the Vyshyvanka, a loose-fitting shirt, which is often in black or white and features geometric patterns stitched around the edges.  This year’s celebration was seen as a symbol of national unity against the Russian invasion.
