LaDonna Brave Bull Allard was the founder of the first camp for the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).Allard opposed DAPL from the beginning, because it ran past her son’s grave.
Like other protesters, she was concerned that a spill would contaminate water sources as well as land that’s sacred to native peoples.
She donated her family’s land to serve as the Sacred Stone Camp for protestors. A member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Allard was the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for a time, and she shared her deep knowledge of tribal history with the protestors who flocked to her land.
