A clever dog has been trained to pick out the scent of invasive mussels before it spreads to bodies of waters in Canada. Hilo, a four-year-old Labrador mix, can differentiate a native mussel and an invasive one, which is known as zebra mussels, by sniffing.
The zebra mussels are typically about one centimetre long, which makes them hard to see, and it's been found in 750 lakes across North American.
Scientists have been unable to kill these mussels without harming other wildlife, therefore Hilo and other working dogs were brought in for help.
