Don King will promote a heavyweight world title fight next week. No, it’s not the 1990s and no, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk haven’t suddenly agreed to square up to each other on seven days’ notice.
But the veteran and fabled promoter is still pulling strings in the sport’s glamour division even at the age of 90.The flag-waving American still wants a piece of the big pie, as he lurks in the background on lesser fights.
Yet again controversy is not far from his work.Somehow American Trevor Bryan is defending his WBA ‘regular’ title against Jonathan Guidry.
Bryan, 32, is an unremarkable heavyweight whose best win was against Bermane Stiverne for the belt 12 months ago.Stiverne, a former victim of Deontay Wilder, had been out of the ring for two years yet was granted a shot at the ‘title’.But it is nothing compared to the farcical situation that sees Guidry gifted a shot.Usyk is the real WBA heavyweight champion, but the sanctioning body has got ‘regular’ titles in almost every weight class, too.King-promoted Bryan has this version and he can criminally call himself a world champion.
