Cases of the deadly coronavirus in Iran are likely to be hundreds of times greater than the government has claimed, an expert has warned.
Authorities in the Islamic republic have said the total number of cases in the country is 6,556. But writer Graeme Wood has argued that the number of government officials falling ill to the flu-like virus indicates that the true figure is likely to be in the millions.
He also warned that although the disease "started in China ," it is in danger of becoming "finally and irrevocably uncontained in Iran".
So far, Iran lies third in terms of total confirmed cases, behind China, which has some 80,000, and South Korea, which has more than 7,000.
