Police close A56 near Bury following 'concerns for welfare' of a person

A major road near Bury was shut following concerns for the welfare of a person. Emergency services were called to the incident on the A56 Haslingden Bypass this morning (Wednesday, March 9).

The road was shut in both directions between the Rising Bridge roundabout and Woolpack Island. READ MORE: Woman bitten by Akita dog and back 'sliced open' during walk in Greater Manchester beauty spot Hud Hey Road and Roundhill Road were also closed due the incident, police said.

It led to long delays on the A56 and surrounding roads around Haslingden. The closure was first reported at 11.20am and all lanes reopened at about 12pm.

Lancashire Constabulary confirmed they had received reports of 'concern for welfare', but refused to issue any further information.
