Birmingham is being put in a local lockdown with a ban on households mixing after a worrying spike in coronavirus cases. New restrictions will come into effect on Tuesday in Birmingham and the neighbouring boroughs of Sandwell and Solihull, affecting more than 1.5 million people, but local leaders have urged people to begin following the ban immediately.
Dr Justin Varney, Birmingham's director of public health, said the rise in infections was linked mostly to gatherings in private homes at the end of August and over the bank holiday weekend, and an increase in testing resulted in more confirmed cases.
