Berlin 2024: New Films Starring Gael García Bernal, Rooney Mara & More Headline This Year’s Competition

EXCLUSIVE: With their Bob Marley movie, One Love, opening this weekend, Paramount Pictures is now moving fast on another high profile biopic on popular music group, looking to have found an A-list director to lead the project. While a deal isn’t done, sources tell Deadline that Ridley Scott is in negotiations to direct the untitled Bee Gees movie for Paramount. Scott will produce alongside producing partner Michael Pruss of Scott Free, Graham King through his GK Films banner and Stacey Snider.

Sundance dealmaking was buoyant, the awards season is coming to a head with a number of critically acclaimed movies having done well at the box office, and apparently peak TV is over. Whisper it quietly, but after years of movies being almost a dirty word compared to the lustre of TV, is independent theatrical film staging a comeback?

Noggin, Paramount Global‘s interactive learning subscription service for preschoolers, is shutting down. The Nick Jr.-affiliated app is slated to sunset this year, with the majority of its staff let go in the latest round of layoffs at Paramount Global on Tuesday that impacted about 800 U.S. employees.

Nicholas Pinnock (The Book of Clarence) has been set for the male lead in Peacock‘s limited series suspense thriller Long Bright River, Deadline has learned. He’s set to star opposite Amanda Seyfried, who will also serve as executive producer.

Beginning overseas release yesterday, the Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed biopic grossed $4.9M across 10 markets, several of them giving the story of the reggae icon No. 1 status and the biggest or second-biggest launch day ever for a music biopic — in Jamaica, it scored the biggest opening day of all time. 

Add another one to it-actor Barry Keoghan‘s upcoming film list. THR reports that the “Saltburn” actor will star in the latest movie from “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck, “Amo Saddam.” Keoghan will star as an American soldier tasked with guardian the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in the months before his trial and execution.

Driving but not as in-your-face as its predecessor “Houdini,” the song struts along on a powerful disco beat, with a melody that swerves into almost Middle-Eastern scales, reminiscent of ABBA’s biggest disco hit, 1978’s “Voulez-Vous.” While the influence there is subtle, it’s unmistakable, and is driven home later in the song with piano flourishes that recalls ABBA keyboardist Benny Andersson’s on many of the group’s hits, most famously “Dancing Queen.” It’s the best kind of tribute: nothing overt, but a sly, fun wink for fans who notice it.
