Rodney Marsh was a talented painter who always generated mixed emulsions about his football career. Blessed with enviable skill, a gift for the unexpected and spectacular goals, Marsh could paint exotic pictures with a ball at his feet.
Where Manchester City 's most expensive players in the 1970s often struggled to express themselves, Marsh was more Salvador Dali than Steve Daley.
Even now, he wonders how his expansive brush strokes might have fitted into a side coached by Pep Guardiola. “I would have loved to play for Guardiola because as well as setting high standards, he recognises individual brilliance and skill,” said Marsh. “But I’m not sure if he would have liked me juggling the ball three or four times on my knee before shooting.
