Vladimir Putin has threatened to shut off gas supplies to “unfriendly countries” in Europe from tomorrow (April 1) unless leaders agree to pay for it in roubles.

The Russian leader has warned those nationals who rely on Russia ’s gas supplies to open a “roubles account with a Russian bank” in order to continue using the resource.

Putin made the move earlier today (31 March) via a signed decree with Europe facing the prospect of losing a third of its gas supply if he goes ahead with his threat.During the televised announcement, Putin said: “If such payments are not made, we will consider this a default on the part of buyers, with all the ensuing consequences.“Nobody sells us anything for free, and we are not going to do charity either - that is, existing contracts will be stopped.”Although Putin added that existing contracts will be honoured, Putin gave conditions that they have to abide by the new rules or be in breach of their contract.According to reports, Germany would be most affected by the decision as they are heavily reliant on Russia. However, the country has reportedly already activated an emergency plan.European leaders have stated that the gas contracts that were signed had stipulations for payment in euros or US dollars and have refused to pay in other currencies.German economy minister Robert Habeck said “it is crucial for us that the contracts are respected.”“It is important for us not to give a signal that we will be blackmailed by Putin.”Keep up to date with all the latest news stories.
