Patrick Hipes Executive Managing EditorChaitanya Tamhane’s The Disciple, the Indian movie that is executive produced by Alfonso Cuarón, has joined the official competition lineup of the Venice Film Festival.
It becomes the first film from India since 2001 to land a competition slot in either the Venice, Cannes, or Berlin film festivals.
It also will screen at the Toronto Film Festival in Toronto.The last Indian film to play in competition in Venice was Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding, which won the Golden Lion.The plot of The Disciple centers on Sharad Nerulkar, who has devoted his life to becoming an Indian classical music vocalist, diligently following the traditions and discipline of old masters, his guru, and his father.
