darts has exploded over the last 20 years, with viewing figures going through the roof, both on TV and at the venues themselves.Darts is no longer seen as a beer-swilling pub game, but as a serious sport containing high-quality players with even higher stakes.
And the increased media exposure has led to a series of big-name sponsors getting involved, desperate to share the spotlight which is shone on the sport. That is summed up by the drastic increase in prize money at the sport’s marque event, the World Darts Championship, one of the staples of the festive season.Phil Taylor has won the tournament an incredible 16 times, with his first title coming back in 1990 and his last in 2013.
The first two world titles came under the BDO banner before the split and the start of the Professional Darts Corporation. But even in the early days of the PDC, the prize money was modest compared to today’s standards.
In fact, after his first 11 PDC World titles, Taylor collected less than the £500,000 Peter Wright banked for winning the 2022 crown at the Alexandra Palace.Going back to Taylor’s first PDC World title win in 1995, the champion secured just £12,000.
