Simon Whitlock 'gutted' after missing out on historic moment at World Cup of Darts

Darts.There was never been a nine-dart finish at the tournament, but that almost changed as Whitlock and partner Damon Heta both hit 180s at the start of the third leg in Australia’s first round clash against Lithuania in Frankfurt.Whitlock had the responsibility for the next visit, needing 141 to complete a perfect leg.

He nailed treble 20 and then treble 15, only to miss what would have been a history-making double 18 by millimetres. It was still an impressive 10-dart leg as Heta closed it out at the start of his next visit and Australia went on to win 5-2.

After the match, Whitlock admitted his disappointment at missing out on the nine-darter, posting on Twitter: “Gutted this didn’t go in but super pleased to have got through the first round! @DamonHeta180 was solid.

Love the new darts.” In reply, one fan said: “Ah unlucky! Great effort though, and there's always a chance in the next round!” while another said: “That was quality guys.
