Phil Taylor to top bill in Blackpool again as new tournament seals free-to-air coverage

Darts fans can look forward to watching a new tournament starring Phil Taylor on terrestrial TV next year.The burgeoning World Seniors Tour has added a new event to its 2023 schedule, joining the World Championship, World Masters and World Matchplay. The new event, staged at Blackpool’s Viva entertainment venue on March 25 and 26, will be called the Champions of Champions.

Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor’s return to the sport is already over after he was dumped out of the World Seniors at the quarter-final stage by Kevin Painter.Taylor had won the previous 31 meetings between the pair in succession, but saw that run was ended by ‘The Artist' at the Circus Tavern.‘The Power’ had retired from darts four years ago after winning a record 16 world championships but returned to take part in the inaugural World Seniors tournament.He defeated Peter Manley by three sets to one in the second round to set up a quarter-final clash with Painter on Saturday night.Despite his long history of success against Painter, his World Seniors tournament run ended in disappointment.Painter was dominant, winning nine of the 12 legs to ease into the semi-finals where he will face Robert Thornton.Taylor bounced back from losing the first leg by squaring things up, before Painter hit double 10 and then took out 106 to seal the opening set.‘The Artist’ then stormed into the lead in the second set, hitting three 140s before breaking Taylor’s throw with a double 18.Who is the greatest darts player of all time? Darts legend Bob Anderson missed the board entirely during the World Seniors Darts Championship on Thursday evening.A new competition for 2022, Anderson, 74, kicked off the inaugural tournament against 2015 World Grand Prix winner Robert Thornton.The maiden competition sees former tungsten throwers battle it out to see who still reigns supreme in a four-day single-elimination tournament at Circus Tavern.Rules stipulate all competitors must be over the age of 50, though current PDC Tour Card holders are ineligible to participate - ruling out darts stars Peter Wright, Gary Anderson, Raymond van Barneveld and Glen Durrant.Throwing for a prize pot of £30,000, the championship will come to its dramatic climax on Sunday with Phil "The Power" Taylor the bookies favourite to take home the crown.And kicking off the tournament on Thursday evening was three-time BDO World Masters champion Bob Anderson who was pitted against Robert "The Thorn" Thornton.Though the match didn't get off to the greatest start as "The Limestone Cowboy" missed the board completely midway through the opening leg.Trailing 282-36, Anderson hit a single one and a single 20 before dropping down the board to aim for treble 19.But the 74-year-old got it all wrong, missing the board entirely as the commentary team quoted "Little bit of early nerves for Bob."HAVE YOUR SAY!
