EXCLUSIVE: Coda producer Vendôme Pictures has made two appointments and launched a documentary division. 

Brent Lang Executive Editor Keith Redmon, a veteran talent manager and Oscar-nominated producer, will depart Black Bear and join Philippe Rousselet’s Vendôme, the Academy Award-winning banner behind“CODA.” At Vendôme, Redmon will continue representing several of his longtime clients, including Morten Tyldum (“Silo”, “The Imitation Game”), John Hillcoat (“George & Tammy”, “The Road”), Raine Allen-Miller (“Rye Lane”), Michaël Roskam (“The Drop,” “Bullhead”) and Kyle Killen (“Man on Fire,” “The Beaver”). Redmon is also producing Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian,” which is being adapted by John Logan with Hillcoat directing for New Regency.

Selena Kuznikov Andy Serkis is joining the cast of Oren Moverman’s World War II psychological thriller “The Man With the Miraculous Hands” starring Woody Harrelson. Vendôme’s Philippe Rousselet and Jerico Films’ Eric Jehelmann will produce while Vendôme’s Fabrice Gianfermi and Jeremy Plager serve as executive producers.

Brent Lang Executive Editor In a competitive situation, Vendôme Pictures, the Oscar-winning banner behind “CODA,” has optioned the film and television rights to John Vaillant’s nonfiction book about climate change “Fire Weather: A True Story from a Hotter World.” It comes after the book was released to much acclaim in June 2023 and went on to win the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. It was also a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award, andwas named a best book of the year by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Financial Times and The Guardian, among many other prominent publications.

Nicolas Cage (Renfield) and writer-director Andrew Niccol (Anon) will reteam with Vendôme Pictures, the Academy Award winning studio behind CODA, on Lords of War — a sequel to the 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, which starred Cage as Yuri Orlov, a composite character based on numerous arms dealers.

The Oscar-winning star will reunite with writer and director Andrew Niccol on “Lords Of War,” the sequel to their 2005 crime thriller, “Lord Of War.” Cage will reprise his role as morally compromised arms dealer Yuri Orlov with “It’s” Bill Skarsgård co-starring as his son, who is a chip off the old block. Vendôme Group is backing the project, which is set to begin principal photography in the fall of 2023. FilmNation Entertainmentwill represent the international sales rights and introduce the film at the Cannes Film Festival, while CAA Media Finance will handle the domestic rights. Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi who produced the original are producing under their Vendôme Pictures banner, alongside Cage under his company, Saturn Films. Skarsgård is executive producing.

Los Angeles and Paris-based Vendôme Pictures, producer of the 2022 Academy Award Best Picture CODA, has announced new drama feature Ibelin, based on the real-life story of the disabled, British gamer Mats Steen, who went by the name of ‘Ibelin’ in the gaming world.

Variety examines the Oscar selection process in an array of international markets to see what works, what’s broken and what needs fixing. Despite being over-represented in competition lineups at major festivals like Cannes and Venice, France has had a cursed track record in the international feature film race, and has been overshadowed by smaller countries like Denmark in recent years. The French haven’t been able to claim an Oscar victory in the category since 1993 with Regis Wargnier’s win for “Indochine.” In the past 15 years, only four French films submitted have landed a nomination: Ladj Ly’s “Les Miserables” in 2020, Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Turkish-language film “Mustang” in 2016, Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet” starring Tahar Rahim in 2010 and Laurent Cantet’s Palme d’Or-winning “The Class” in 2008. Ironically, some French-language films repping other countries in the international feature race have been more successful, such as Michael Haneke’s “Amour,” which was submitted by Austria in 2013 and won. In the upcoming race, France is vying for a nomination with Alice Diop’s Venice Golden Lion-winning “Saint Omer,” a politically minded feature debut based on the real-life trial of Fabienne Kabou, a Senegalese immigrant accused of murdering her 15-month-old baby. This year’s Oscar committee, which included the likes of Audiard (“A Prophet”), Philippe Rousselet (“CODA”) and Hengameh Panahi (“Persepolis”), was bitterly split between “Saint Omer,” acquired by Neon’s Super label after Toronto, and “One Fine Morning,” Mia Hansen-Løve’s romance drama starring Lea Seydoux, which was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics in Cannes. The heated deliberations ended with a vote, as it almost always does.

They will meet Sept. 15 to pre-select three to five films.

Variety will honor French entertainment giant Pathé with its Achievement in Intl. Film Award on May 20 at the Cannes Film Festival.The oldest of the French film groups is still fully involved in exhibition, production, distribution and sales, is family-owned and run by Jérôme Seydoux.

Three-time Oscar winner CODA is returning to theaters this Friday for a limited run in over 600 locations. The film will be available with open captions to be accessible to the Deaf and hard of hearing.

France’s president Emmanuel Macron has celebrated the win of CODA at the Oscars last night by tweeting his congratulations to the filmmakers involved.
