After a slam dunk first season, the team behind Running Point — the Warner Bros. Television show loosely based on Los Angeles Lakers owner and president Jeanie Buss’ life and stewardship — is prepping for the next game in the Kate Hudson dramedy vehicle.

Lionsgate has signed a first look film producing deal with their A Simple Favor franchise and The Housemaid filmmaker Paul Feig and his Feigco Entertainment.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Koji Fukada is set to direct “Love on Trial,” a film inspired by real cases in Japan where J-Pop idols have been sued for violating “no relationship” contracts. “Love on Trial” reteams the renowned Japanese filmmaker with MK2 Films for the fourth time. They previously collaborated on “Love Life,” which competed at Venice in 2022, as well as “Harmonium” (Cannes’ Un Certain Regard), and “A Missing Girl” (Locarno and Toronto film festivals).

Rachelle Williams-BenAry has signed with CAA for representation.

Woman Of The Hour.Based on the life of serial killer Rodney Alcala, the film depicts Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) during an appearance on TV show The Dating Game in 1978, where he wins a date with Cheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick). At the time, Alcala had murdered five women.Other cast members in the film include Nicolette Robinson, Tony Hale, Kathryn Gallagher, Pete Holmes, and Kelly Jakle.Woman Of The Hour premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023, and was released worldwide by Netflix on October 18, 2024.The film’s score is by Dan Romer and Mike Tuccillo, who previously worked together on TV shows Ramy and Love Life.

BreAnna Bell Janet Hubert is making her way from Belair to Serenity, SC (or, more accurately Tampa, Florida) as she joins “Sweet Magnolias” for Season 3. Variety has learned Hubert will guest star as Bev Decatur, Helen’s (Heather Headley) mother. In a moment of crisis, Helen goes to Tampa to visit her mother, needing Bev’s unique blend of humor, compassion, and tough love. “Following the brawl at Sullivan’s, Maddie wrestles with the best way to help Cal and works to clear her own emotional path. Helen faces difficult decisions about the men in her life. And Dana Sue searches for a way to use Miss Frances’ check to help the community, without upending her family. Naman Ramachandran Paramount+ and Tving‘s Korean series “Bargain” has won the critics’ choice award at the Serien Camp Festival in Cologne. In April, “Bargain” became the first-ever Korean series to win best screenplay at the Canneseries Festival in France. The series stars actors Jun Jong-seo (“Money Heist: Korea”) and Jin Seon-kyu (“Extreme Job”) and is an adaptation of director Lee Chung-hyun’s 2015 short film of the same name. Director Jun Woo-sung, who was part of the production team of the short, picked up the story and developed it into a six-part series. “Bargain” revolves around a group of strangers who gather at a remote motel with ulterior motives – seeking to bargain. Unlike the original film, the series follows the characters after an unexpected earthquake traps them inside the building. With no one to trust, they must find a way to survive.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Marc Maron has joined the cast of Universal’s untitled New York Christmas movie, written by Richard Curtis, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Notting Hill” and “Love Actually.” Maron is starring alongside Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu in the film, a fairy-tale comedy about a workaholic man who enlists the help of a magical genie to help win his family back before Christmas. Sam Boyd, who wrote and created the Anna Kendrick-led HBO Max series “Love Life,” will direct. It’s set to premiere on the NBCUniversal-owned streaming service Peacock on a yet-to-be-determined date.

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.
