Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Koji Fukada is set to direct “Love on Trial,” a film inspired by real cases in Japan where J-Pop idols have been sued for violating “no relationship” contracts. “Love on Trial” reteams the renowned Japanese filmmaker with MK2 Films for the fourth time.

They previously collaborated on “Love Life,” which competed at Venice in 2022, as well as “Harmonium” (Cannes’ Un Certain Regard), and “A Missing Girl” (Locarno and Toronto film festivals).

The film follows the story follows Mai, a rising J-Pop idol whose big break is threatened when she falls in love, violating the “no love” clause in her contract.

As her relationship is exposed, Mai finds herself entangled in a public trial, her life spiraling into chaos. Ultimately, the film explores the harsh realities of fame and the fight for personal freedom. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Koji Fukada,” said Fionnuala Jamison, managing director of MK2 Films. “This poignant drama presents a candid portrayal of a young woman’s struggle against a dehumanizing social system.
