A passenger had to be airlifted from the Waverley to Ayr Hospital after falling ill on the iconic paddle steamer.The shock incident unfolded just off the coast of Arran as the PS Waverley sailed on one of its summer tours.Crew on board the famous vessel responded quickly to a medical incident which sparked a huge emergency response on Thursday, August 3.A coastguard helicopter was sent to the scene from Prestwick where the passenger was airlifted back to dry land at Ayr Hospital.A spokesperson for Waverley excursions said on Friday: "We had a passenger who took ill yesterday while Waverley was on her afternoon cruise off the coast of Arran."The crew responded quickly to help and then contacted the coastguard.
The passenger was lifted off the ship by helicopter and taken to hospital."A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard sent its helicopter from Prestwick to transfer a passenger from a travelling vessel to Ayr Hospital yesterday (August 3) at around 4.15pm."
