‘Street Fighter’ Removed From Sony Release Calendar, ‘Beneath the Storm’ Shifts to July 2026 and Renamed ‘Shiver’

Jack Dunn In a series of changes to its slate of upcoming films, Sony has removed its “Street Fighter” film adaptation, originally set for a March 20, 2026 debut, from its release calendar and shifted Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller “Beneath the Storm,” now titled “Shiver,” from August 2025 to July 2026. “Street Fighter” will be co-produced and developed by Capcom, the Japanese videogame developer who launched the original franchise in 1987, and Legendary, who scooped up the TV and film rights for the prolific game series in 2023. Further details about the film, such as plot, cast, director and writer, are all currently unknown.

‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Becomes Game Franchise’s Second-Highest Selling Launch Day Title

On Saturday, Ubisoft announced that the Feudal Japan-set game had crossed 2 million activations. In internal communications obtained Monday by Variety, the developer told employees that player engagement is at “record levels” and that “feedback across moderated, verified platforms — those less affected by review bombing — remains incredibly positive.” Though no specific sales numbers have been revealed for the game, a source within Ubisoft has confirmed to Variety that “Shadows” had the next-best Day 1 sales revenue for an “Assassin’s Creed” title behind only 2020’s “Valhalla.” The title also marks Ubisoft’s best Day 1 launch of any game on the PlayStation digital store.

Clifford Coonan It’s been a tough few years in the Asian film market since the pandemic, but “3 Body Problem” and “Better Days” director Derek Tsang believes that we can expect growth in Asian co-productions, with grants and regional tie-ups playing a growing role in boosting the sector. “I can see that many filmmakers are already exploring the possibilities of co-producing films with other regions and their producers. Even our government in Hong Kong is encouraging filmmakers to explore the opportunity by providing schemes that grants co-productions with other countries,” Tsang told Variety in an interview at the recently concluded Hong Kong FilMart.
