Mexican pilot whose plane crashed in shark-infested waters drifted for nine days on a makeshift raft before watching sharks tear his severely injured co-pilot to pieces. The gruesome nautical incident may sound like something from a film, but it actually happened on February 13, 1948, and involved two men - Esteban De Lion and Neil Womack. The two pilots had been assigned to pick up some shrimps near Carmen, Mexico but they were destined never to get there.Just 40 miles from their destination, the pairs C47 aircraft suddenly began to nosedive into the water, eventually crashing on the sea and starting to sink.

The men amazingly survived their fall from the sky - but the real terror was yet to come.Alone and adrift in the shark-infested waters surrounding Mexico, the two men were completely isolated with extremely limited supplies of food and water. When the pilots' fate was discovered a large air and sea search immediately got underway but after a week of combing the sea no trace of them could be found and the search was called off.

However, the two pilots were very much alive although they might have wished they weren't. Womack had been seriously injured in the crash and soon became delirious.

After a few days at sea, he fell overboard into the water - out of reach of De Lion right into a swarm of sharks who had been circling the raft for days.
