Furious Tory chiefs took revenge tonight against an MP who thwarted Boris Johnson's pick for a top security job. Julian Lewis launched a surprise coup against "failing" Chris Grayling by teaming up with opposition MPs to lead the Intelligence and Security Committee.
Tonight Mr Lewis was thrown out of the Conservative Parliamentary party by Chief Whip Mark Spencer. A senior government source accused Mr Lewis, a Tory MP of 23 years, of “working with Labour and other opposition MPs for his own advantage.” He remains a member of the Conservative Party.
A Downing Street source did not say if Boris Johnson gave the direct order for Mr Lewis to go. But the move has clear echoes of Boris Johnson sacking 21 Tories for defying him over Brexit
